Dog Advocate

When I was a little girl I would pray every night that dogs wouldn't be put to sleep. Sadly, for some it is an escape from cruelty or neglect. Injustices occur all too frequently and the demand for education and rescue is overwhelming. Nonetheless, I've worked to do my share as time permits.
I've rescued, fostered, rehabilitated, transported and rehomed dogs ranging from Pit Bulls to Maremma's. I've worked with an international magazine in developing their rescue policy and programs. Several appearances on CTV's Vicki Gabareau show have made it possible for me to provide education and, most importantly, homes for unwanted dogs. Most memorably, I was able to pitch one of the producer's on a show about adopting senior dogs.
Working with anti-BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) advocates, I penned the slogan, “Train, contain and socialize—all responsible owners agree.” I also prepared the successful strategy that overturned BSL in Brooks, Alberta.
As a writer, breeder, rescuer, novice judge and handler, I have many opportunities to educate and make a positive difference. Sometimes the difference seems insignificant, but I remind myself about the starfish story:
One day a girl walking along a beach at low tide noticed hundreds of stranded starfish, overheating and dying in the hot sun. She began throwing them back into the ocean, one by one.
A man passing by said, “You can't possibly save all these starfish. What you're doing doesn't matter.”
She held up a small starfish to him and said, “It matters to this one.”
